Trilogy — Emerson, Lake & Palmer (1972)

Released in the United Kingdom on 23 June 1972 by Island Records. A hostile contemporary review by Robert Christgau in The Village Voice (October 1972), graded C-minus, set against the album's UK, US and German chart peaks from the original 1972 run.

The verdict at the time

In the October 1972 Consumer Guide column Robert Christgau gave Trilogy a C-minus and dismissed it: "The pomposities of Tarkus and the monstrosities of the Moussorgsky homage clinch it--these guys are as stupid as their most pretentious fans."

Sources & context

Dismissed at the time, Trilogy is now regarded as a progressive-rock classic. Later reappraisals, including Louder/Prog's 2015 review of the deluxe reissue, describe it as an outstanding release that has stood the test of time.
