Waiting for the Sun: The Doors' number-one album dismissed by critics
Released in the US on 3 July 1968. A contemporary hostile review, alongside chart results in the US, UK and France with their dates.
The verdict at the time
Jim Miller reviewed Waiting for the Sun for Rolling Stone on 28 September 1968. He allowed that 'Spanish Caravan', 'Not to Touch the Earth' and 'Summer's Almost Gone' had their moments, but found the songs vacillating 'between the trivial and the neo-Freudian', criticised Morrison's singing and subtlety, and called the album 'a respectable, if unimpressive, third album' and 'great rock it isn't'.
