Burnt Hills: Jackson Wingate on three decades of basement psychedelia

Burnt Hills

Albany's Burnt Hills have been holding weekly improvised psychedelic sessions in Jackson Wingate's basement since October 2003. A new interview in It's Psychedelic Baby! Magazine traces Wingate's path from the 1980s bands Hunger Artists and Hunters of Gracchus through the ERL Records shop era — where Sun City Girls played an in-store in 1992 — to the founding of Burnt Hills as a Monday-night ritual at "Helderberg House." The band's sound, captured on releases like Holy Fires (ruralfaune, 2009) and Slip Through Time (Rambutan, 2023), blends sprawling prog-noise-space jams with heavy psych and drone. Wingate describes the sessions as "ridiculously fun and massively healing," played at jet-airplane volume behind a wall of amps in a cinderblock basement. The interview also covers the fifty-plus house shows hosted between 2006 and 2017 with artists including Jack Rose, Bill Nace, Sightings and Jooklo Duo.
