Great Falls: Jody Dunstan Reviews The Bite That Grows Up on Echoes and Dust

Seattle noise-rock/sludge trio Great Falls release their second Neurot Recordings album, The Bite That Grows Up, on 16 October. Echoes and Dust reviewer Jody Dunstan calls it the band's most cohesive and conscious work to date. Produced by Scott Evans (Neurosis, Sumac) at Studio Litho and Antisleep, the eight-track record follows 2023's Objects Without Pain with bleaker, more chaotic dynamics. Opener "A Small Weakness" moves from discordant riff to lo-fi guitar and a shouted "I am sorry" before collapsing into a noisy maelstrom. "Pinned Against Time" showcases Nick Parks' drumming as the glue holding the chaos together. "Worse Than Sleep" opens with drums and vocals alone before the full band crashes in. "Nicotine in the Spine", featuring additional vocals from the late Peter Clement Lund (Kollapse), gives the bass more space in the mix. The short interlude "Buildings Full of Rope" leads to closer "What No One Can Give", which explodes from an alarm-like riff into a final passage where instruments veer off in different directions. Dunstan notes the band have matured without softening. The album is available for pre-order on vinyl (neon orange, mustard, black/gold burst splatter), CD and digital via Neurot Recordings.
