The Obelisk revisits Colour Haze's 2005 self-titled landmark

Colour Haze

The Obelisk's Friday Full-Length feature returns to Colour Haze's 2005 self-titled album, the Munich trio's fourth record and the one JJ Koczan calls "one of the best heavy albums ever made." Recorded in four days at Institut Für Wohlklangforschung in Hannover with engineer Willi Dammeier and Stefan Koglek producing, it was the first release on Koglek's own Elektrohasch Schallplatten. Dave "Sula Bassana" Schmidt guests on synth for the 22-minute centrepiece "Peace, Brothers & Sisters!", while Christian Hawellek begins his run on Hammond organ. Koglez's guitar, Philipp Rasthofer's bass and Manfred Merwald's drums intertwine across seven tracks and 56 minutes — from the intimate opener "Mountain" through the Tao Te Ching-inspired "Tao Nr. 43" and the instrumental "Did Êl It" to the sprawling "Love" and the ritualistic apex of "Peace, Brothers & Sisters!". Koczan writes that the album "teaches you something about what heavy music can do or about yourself" and remains "essential and declarative" nearly 22 years on. The feature includes a full Bandcamp stream of the album.
