Arthur Brown with Dan Smith: Nature reviewed on Echoes and Dust

Arthur Brown with Dan Smith

Legendary British vocalist Arthur Brown, now 84, released Nature on 4 September 2026 via Prophecy Productions — a collaborative album with composer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Smith that draws on six decades of boundary-pushing work from The Crazy World of Arthur Brown through Kingdom Come to the present day.

The record was shaped in the North Yorkshire landscape where Brown has unexpectedly settled, incorporating field recordings of brooks, river flow, wind in trees, wind chimes and hearth fire captured around his home. Producer Isaac McInnis (Crooked Room Studio, York) blended these environmental textures with improvised sessions guided by instinct rather than rigid structure. Dan Smith contributed guitar, bass, keyboards, programming and backing vocals; guest musicians include Sam Walker (drums, steel pans, percussion), Claire Waller (scissors, recorder) and Paul Elliott (drums, percussion). Mastering was handled by Kevin Tuffy at Tuff Mastering, Berlin.

The eight-track sequence runs: Nature, With A Tear, The Source, Seven, Bursting The Bubble, Water On Stone, Open Hearts and Enough. Zachary Nathanson, reviewing for Echoes and Dust on 22 September, describes the album as "challenging, cosmic, glam, industrial, poetic, post-punk, and almost angelic at times," highlighting the Hawkwind-like voyage of "Bursting the Bubble" and the cinematic nightmare of "Seven." He concludes that Nature "may not be for the faint of heart" but demands repeated listens as Brown continues to push creatively after six decades.

The title track's official video, directed by Marvin Stang and premiered on the Prophecy Productions YouTube channel, presents the album's theatrical world in a vaudevillian, dystopian warning. Physical editions include a limited 48-page 2CD artbook with essays by Brown, marbled vinyl variants (400 copies each) and standard gatefold LPs. Pre-orders are available via the Prophecy Productions shop and Bandcamp.
