Iron Jinn: The Obelisk reviews Zeitgeist on the Run

Iron Jinn

Dutch dark progressive outfit Iron Jinn have received a review for their second album Zeitgeist on the Run on The Obelisk. The review by JJ Koczan, published 23 September 2026, examines the seven-track, 66-minute double LP released 18 September on Suburban Records.

Recorded by Pieter Kloos (Motorpsycho, The Devil's Blood, DOOL) in a former dance studio, the album marks the band's expansion from a trio to a five-piece with the addition of bassist Gerben Bielderman and keyboardist Jarno van Es, the latter having debuted with Iron Jinn at Roadburn 2024. The new lineup shifts the dynamic toward cinematic atmosphere and melodic depth, freeing the guitars to explore a darkly progressive sound that draws on Opeth, Motorpsycho and The Devil's Blood without imitating any of them.

Koczan traces the arc from the 9-minute opener "Sayonara" through the goth-tinged "The Glass Wall", the side-long "Residuum Strut" and the 18-minute closer "The Futurist" — a slow-burn world-builder that summarizes the record's restless rhythm and dramatic scope. He notes the absence of cultish ritual aesthetics; instead, the band follows its own sonic framework with plotted-out sensibilities behind the longer excursions. The artwork by Louise te Poele continues the visual theme from their debut.

The lead single "The Futurist" was issued as a lyric video in April 2026. Zeitgeist on the Run is available on double black vinyl and a limited "Dracula" coloured edition via Suburban Records and Bandcamp.
