Owen Knight on Mourning Phase: a 1971 British psych-folk rarity resurfaces

Mourning Phase

Psychedelic Baby Magazine published an interview with Owen Knight, guitarist of Mourning Phase, in October 2026. Knight, of the Southend-on-Sea quartet, recalls how the band — then called General Services — recorded its sole album in a single 90-minute session at Eden Studios in August 1971. They pressed about 50 copies for friends and family before the recording vanished into private-press obscurity. Now issued by Seelie Court and streaming on Bandcamp, Mourning Phase is a cult British psychedelic folk album blending folk, chamber textures and fiercely expressive vocals. Knight discusses Mary Redfern's hand-drawn artwork and the long path from demo disc to reissue. The track "Dross" is available on YouTube, and the full album streams on Bandcamp.
