The Obelisk reviews The Well's ...And Flames Ran Like Living Animals: a welcome return after seven years

Austin heavy psych trio The Well return with their fourth album ...And Flames Ran Like Living Animals, their first in seven years and first for Spaceflight Records. The Obelisk's review notes the band make up for lost time with sharpened craft and thoughtful vocal arrangements between guitarist Ian Graham and bassist Lisa Alley, backed by drummer Jason Sullivan. Produced by Bryan Richie (The Sword) and Chico Jones across nine tracks, the record balances atmosphere and directness, growing darker as it progresses. The review highlights melodic complexity in harmonies on "Between the Bodies" and "Mystery Babylon", the Trouble-influenced doom chug of "New Hallelujah for the Damned", and the baglama-laced horror-tinged closer "Other Girls". After nearly 15 years, The Well tighten their niche of heavy psych, stoner rock and doom without falling into cliché.
